The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC), in collaboration with the East African Community (EAC) Secretariat, will participate in the 30th Session of the Conference of the Parties (COP30) to the UNFCCC, to be held from 10–21 November 2025 in Belém, Brazil.

As a specialized institution of the EAC, LVBC will use this global platform to highlight the Lake Victoria Basin (LVB) as a transboundary climate change hotspot and to advocate for increased adaptation financing, particularly for women, youth, and vulnerable communities.

LVBC will align its engagement with the six primary UNFCCC thematic areas which include:

1-Transitioning Energy, Industry, and Transport

2-Stewarding Forests, Oceans, and Biodiversity

3-Transforming Agriculture and Food Systems

4-Building Resilience for Cities, Infrastructure, and Water

5-Fostering Human and Social Development

6 -Unleashing Enablers and Accelerators (Financing, Technology, and Capacity Building)

Through these themes, LVBC will emphasize its Integrated Water Resources Management (IWRM) and Ecosystem Restoration programs as models for regional climate resilience and sustainable water governance.

LVBC will also host two major side events at the EAC Pavilion during COP30:

Unveiling the Lake Victoria State of the Basin Report 2025: A Regional Pathway to Sustainable Water Governance and Climate Resilience

Lake Victoria Basin – A Transboundary Climate Change Hotspot: Challenges and Opportunities for Climate-Resilient Investments

Additionally, LVBC will co-host joint EAC/LVBC events including:

Nature for Climate: Scaling Up EAC4Nature Solutions

Biodiversity Meets Climate: Integrating Action for a Resilient Future

Blue Horizons: Accelerating Climate Action through the Blue Economy

These engagements aim to promote knowledge exchange, strengthen partnerships, and mobilize climate finance for regional programs that benefit over 45 million people who depend on the Basin’s resources.

Through its participation in COP30, LVBC seeks to amplify the visibility of the Lake Victoria Basin’s climate challenge and showcase innovative regional solutions for resilience and sustainable development
