The team from Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and Work Bank on 19th July 2019 held wide-ranging discussions centered on enhancing regional initiatives geared towards Green Growth through Private Sector Engagement.
Key participants to the discussions held at LVBC Offices were Dr. Jian Xie, Senior Environmental Specialist, Dr. Nicholas Stephen, and Environmental Specialist of the World Bank, Paul Kariuki, and Regional Coordinator for the Nordic Development Fund (NDF) Project and Isaac Nyarwaya, Principal Resource Mobilization Officer for LVBC among other staff from LVBC.
The discussions were guided by the overall objective –supporting regional and national project teams in advancing implementation of the NDF Project in the wider Lake Victoria Basin and five Partner States of East African Community.
Paul Kariuki presented the project progress since its inception in 2018, achieved milestones, roadmap and targets moving forward. “The project has got good rating and it is on track on many targets,” said Kariuki while presenting to Project Implementation Support and Supervision Mission from the World Bank.
The NDF, a partial extension of Lake Victoria Environment Management Project (LVEMP II) is guided by the development objective of increasing the use of and investment in resource-efficient and cleaner production technologies by private sector enterprises in the Lake Victoria Basin.
According to Kariuki, the realization of the foregoing objective will be measured against three interwoven indicators: sharing of targeted private enterprises in Lake Victoria Basin using resource-efficient cleaner technologies; total amount of investment in resource-efficient cleaner technologies by targeted private enterprises and total amount of greenhouse gas emissions avoided on annual basis due to NDF interventions.
Opening the Project Implementation Support and Supervision Mission meeting, Isaac Nyarwaya referred to NDF interventions as innovative and reiterated LVBC commitment to actualizing the project development objective. He also pledged augmentation of capacity specifically staffing as a way of speeding up the realization of the project objectives and targets.
The meeting also discussed ongoing activities steered by Kenya National Cleaner Production Center (KNCPC), report of the Value Chain Analysis, Institutional Assessment of Waste Management among other ongoing consultancies.
The Engaging Private Sector for Green Growth in the Lake Victoria Basin (EPSGG-LVB) is financed by the Nordic Development Fund of the World Bank and is regionally coordinated by Lake Victoria Basin Commission of the East African Community (EAC).
