ACC- LVB PROJECT WAS SUCCESSFULLY IMPLEMENTED: SAYS GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS FROM FIVE EAST AFRICAN PARTNER STATES.

Senior government officials from five East African Partner States have hailed Lake Victoria basin commission (LVBC) for the successful implementation of the Adapting to Climate change project in the Lake Victoria Basin (ACC- LVB)

The officials from the Republic of Burundi, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of Kenya, Republic of Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania said the project had changed the lives of millions of people living within the Lake Victoria Basin.

In the United Republic of Tanzania, Magu District Executive Director Ms Fidelica Myovella said, “the people of Magu District in Mwanza Region have benefited from this project and I can proudly say that we have learnt lessons from it and even replicated the same in various areas”.

In the Republic of Burundi, the Executive Secretary of Giteranyi commune Mr Mushengezi Venant said, “through this project, our people have been able to protect the environment, learnt modern bee keeping methods and sustainable income generating activities”. 

Residents of Masaka and Mubende districts in the Republic of Uganda were also among the beneficiaries of the project. 

National project co-coordinator Eng Pamela Agaba, “we are happy this pilot project changed the lives of community members especially those that were facing acute water shortage. The installation of the water tanks has made it easier for the women and community members”.

In the Republic of Rwanda, National project coordinator Mr Seth Muhawenimana said, “Plastering of houses in the rural areas was massive and it changed the lives of many people in the rural areas. Installation of water tanks has also solved problem of water shortage and many groups have been financially empowered”.

National project coordinator in the Republic of Kenya Ms Mayian Saino said, “We managed to train various communities and groups in Kenya on modern farming methods in Siaya and Busia counties. Through this project, modern automated weather stations have been set up in Busia and Siaya counties which are beneficial to farmers in these areas. 

The Adapting to climate change for Lake Victoria Basin project officially ended on 31st August 2023 after the project co-operation agreement was signed in March 2018. 

It was implemented in five East African partner states namely the Republic of Kenya, Republic of Burundi, Republic of Rwanda, Republic of Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania. 

This project was funded by the Adaptation Fund through UNEP to the tune of USD 5 million. 

Currently the commission is negotiating with relevant development partners to upscale the project and extend it to other East African Countries.
