The Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) and KfW have signed two separate agreements to operationalize the grant and financing agreements worth €30 million, which were signed between the East African Community (EAC) and KfW in December 2024.
LVBC Executive Secretary, Dr. Masinde Bwire, and the incoming KfW Portfolio Manager for the Lake Victoria Basin Integrated Water Resource Management (LVB IWRM) Programme, Ms. Anna Kretz, appended their signatures to the documents during a meeting held at the LVBC headquarters on 26th March 2025.
As approved by the 22nd Sectoral Council (SECOM) for the Lake Victoria Basin in February 2024, the two grants will primarily be utilized to expand high-priority investments in the cities of Kampala (Uganda), Mwanza (Tanzania), and Kisumu (Kenya).
Dr. Masinde Bwire, Executive Secretary of LVBC, expressed gratitude, saying, “On behalf of the commission, I extend my sincere thanks to the German government through KfW for their commitment to this project, which will significantly improve sanitation in the cities within the Lake Victoria Basin.”
In her remarks, Ms. Anna Kretz, the incoming KfW Portfolio Manager for the LVB IWRM Programme, stated, “We are delighted to sign these agreements that will aid in the implementation of these projects, which will provide immense benefits to millions of people living within the Lake Victoria Basin.”
The KfW team was on a week-long mission at the LVBC headquarters from 24th to 28th March 2025.
On 26th March, a joint team from KfW, LVBC, the Lake Victoria South Water Works Development Agency, and the Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company visited Manyatta A slums in Kisumu, where the high-priority investment programme will be implemented.
The team visited several key areas, including Manyatta and Obinju Primary Schools, as well as two households that will benefit from the project.
