Lake Victoria Water Supply and Sanitation (LVWATSAN II) is the programme of the East African Community (EAC), coordinated by Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) implemented in 15 towns of the 5 Partner States of the Community. Programme Overall Objective
To support secondary urban centres in the basin to contribute to the reversal of the pollution of the Lake through the improvement of sustainable water supply and sanitation infrastructure in 15 secondary towns within the Lake Victoria Basin.
Specific Objectives
Support pro-poor water and sanitation investments in the secondary urban centres in the Lake Victoria Region;
Build institutional and human resource capacities at local and regional levels for the sustainability of improved water and sanitation services;
Facilitate the benefits of upstream water sector reforms to reach the local level in the participating urban centers; and
Reduce the negative environmental impact of urbanization in the Lake Victoria Basin
Programme’s Approach
Hardware and sofware intervention: LVWATSAN provide water supply and sanitation services to Secondary towns within the Basin. It also builds capacity of communities and targeted town management in enhancing environmental hygiene and sanitation.
Two-level approach:The program is implemented in form of Short Term Interventions (STIs) to provide immediate water supply and sanitation community needs while the Long Term Interventions (LTIs) provide longer term sustainable water supply and sanitation solutions in the targeted towns.

Burundi: Ngozi, Muyinga and Kayanza
Kenya: Keroka, Kericho and Isebania/Sirari;
Rwanda: Kayonza, Nyagatare and Nyanza;
Tanzania: Geita, Sengerema and Nansio;
Uganda: Mayuge, Kayabwe-Bukakata and Ntungamo.

16 Boreholes have been drilled mainly in Tanzanian and Uganda and the citizens in the targeted districts are getting clean water for domestic use;
5 Treatment Plants have been rehabilitated and currently operational in Kenya and Tanzania while construction for 14 treatment plants commenced and ongoing for all the program towns except Kericho where rehabilitation was done under Short Term Interventions;
2 Water treatment plants have been constructed un Uganda while construction for 11 commenced and ongoing.
20 Public water Fountains have been constructed under Short Term Interventions and many more are under construction through Longer Term Interventions in the 5 EAC Partner States;
88 public toilets have been constructed to ensure hygiene and sanitation in the Ease African Community Partner States
423.4 km of new water pipe have been constructed;
1190 water connections have been made;
2562 peers & facilitators trained in Hygiene and Sanitation (about 50% women)
