The contractor responsible for the new Lake Victoria Basin Commission (LVBC) headquarters in Kisumu, Kenya, has officially handed over the completed building to the Commission’s management, marking the successful conclusion of Phase Two of the project.
Construction of the second phase began on August 7, 2023, following the formal handover of the site to a new contractor.
Hon. Joel Arumonyang, Principal Secretary at the State Department for Public Works in the Republic of Kenya, formally handed over the building to the LVBC Executive Secretary, Dr. Masinde Bwire.
The official inauguration ceremony is expected to take place soon, with senior leaders from the East African Community (EAC) anticipated to attend.
Speaking during the handover, Dr. Masinde Bwire, Executive Secretary of the LVBC, said:“I commend the contractor for working tirelessly to deliver this magnificent building that will be our new home. The completion of this building is a reflection of our determination to serve the people of the larger Lake Victoria Basin.”
The construction was supervised by the State Department for Public Works under Kenya’s Ministry of Lands, Public Works, Housing, and Urban Development.
Hon. Joel Arumonyang stated:“On behalf of the Government of the Republic of Kenya, I am pleased with the successful completion of this building and commend both the contractors and the supervisors for demonstrating professionalism from beginning to end.”
The cost of the second phase of construction was USD 2,560,717.68.
In November 2024, the East African Community Council of Ministers approved an additional USD 802,126 in funding. The EAC Secretary General, H.E. Hon. Veronica Mueni Nduva, announced that this allocation—approved during the 46th Ordinary Council meeting held in Arusha from November 23 to 28, 2024—would support the remaining work needed to complete the project.
The total approved funding for the headquarters construction now stands at USD 3,540,000.
The third and final phase of construction is expected to commence soon.
