CONSTRUCTION OF REGIONAL MARITIME RESCUE COORDINATION CENTRE (MRCC) KICKS OFF AT ILEMELA, MWANZA, UNITED REPUBLIC OF TANZANIA.

The construction of Maritime Rescue coordination centre (MRCC) has kicked off in Mwanza, in the United Republic of Tanzania.   

The construction site is at Ilemela, approximately over seventeen Kilometres from Mwanza town.     The construction of the new centre that will cost USD 1,870,000 officially kicked off in December 13th, 2023.   

 The Government of Uganda (GoU) and the United Republic of Tanzania (URT) through the Lake Victoria Basic Commission (LVBC) and with support from the African Development Bank (AfDB) procured a contractor to Design and build the centre.   

The contract REF: LVBC/WKS/AfDB/22-23/01 was signed between LVBC and M/S CK Associates Limited in Association with M/s Oubuntu Consulting Limited and commenced on 12th May 2023 with a design period of six (6) months, construction period 12 months and Defects Liability Period (DLP) of 12 months respectively.  

A Contract Management Team comprising the technical officials nominated from the Government of Uganda and the United Republic of Tanzania, are responsible for managing the contract. Arch. Erick Mapunda from the Tanzania Building Agency (TBA) is leading the construction team assisted by Eng. Asha Arinda, Senior Structural Engineer in the Ministry of Works and Transport from the Republic of Uganda.  

Other members of the team are Arch. Nasiifah Nalugwa and Mr. Ivan Isaac Lukabwe, Quantity Surveyor from the Ministry of Works and Transport from the Republic of Uganda jointly with Eng. Twaha Msita, Port Engineer, Eng. Godwin Masenge, Civil Engineer from the United Republic of Tanzania  

LVBC Executive Secretary Dr. Masinde Bwire said already the contractor has mobilized enough manpower to speed up the process.   

Dr. Bwire said, “the Contractor applied to Mwanza Urban Water Supply and Sanitation Authority (MWAUWASA)and got   water supplied to site and the already done erection of the site offices which is at 80 %”.

The Executive Secretary added that the installation of the Environment, Health and Safety Signage, store and workers shed frames have also been finalised. The Contractor has also submitted materials to Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS) for testing and mandatory approval

Upon completion, the rescue centre will help in improving maritime safety within the East African Community.
