Transboundary Water for Biodiversity and Human Health in the Mara River Basin Project

Project Objectives

The overall object of the project is to promote harmonized Mara River Basin management practices for sustainability.

Three years at US$3 million from USAID East Africa

Main components

Objective 1: Promote trans-boundary management framework for Mara River Basin

This objective is intended to action the proposed framework through the development of the MRB trans-boundary management framework.

 

Deliverables: Reviewed policies, legislations and regulatory frameworks; Agreed trans-boundary management framework in place.

Objective 2: Improve protection and management of Mau forest resources and Mara riverine forests.

This objective is aimed at determining the Total Economic Value (TEV) of Mau forest, establishing a trans-boundary NRM advisory committee.

 

Deliverables: Total Economic Value of Mau forest determined; Mau and Riverine forests advisory committee in place and operational

Objective 3: Promote improved management of protected areas of Masai Mara and Serengeti ecosystems

This objective aims at facilitating governments of Kenya and Tanzania and wildlife management authorities to develop a common understanding on policy and legislation issues to enhance coordinated management of the Maasai Mara and Serengeti as one ecosystem.

 

Deliverables: Trans-boundary working group on protected areas established and operational; Trans-boundary community based natural resource management committees (CBNRM) established and operational

Objective 4: Improve water resources management in the basin

This objective aims at establishing mechanism to implement the Environmental flows recommendations across the two countries.

 

Deliverables: Mara river basin catchment management strategy developed; Trans-boundary water monitoring parameters and schedules standardised & operationalised

Objective 5: Institutional Capacity Building of the Lake Victoria Basin Commission to undertake its regional mandate

This objective intends to build LVBC’s institutional capacity. Deliverables: Project coordination unit in place; Enhanced understanding of USAID operations, rules and regulation; and Enhanced coordination and management capacity of LVBC
