Project NameMaritime Communications for Safety on Lake Victoria Project
Project Objectives(i)            To improve safety of navigation and security on Lake Victoria for the benefit of communities who depend on it for their livelihood as well as commercial shipping; (ii)           To bring efficient and affordable communication to Lake Victoria Basin communities.
Duration and CostFour years at US$20 million from investors and Development Partners
PhasesProject Formulation Stage: Started in November 2008 and will end in June 2010. Implementation of the telecommunications network, maritime search and rescue coordination centre (Mwanza) and 10 rescue stations (FY2010-2012); Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. Implementation of medium term search and rescue facilities (FY2012-2014): Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda
Main components
  1. Lake Victoria Maritime Communications Network. This component provides for a wireless communication system, based upon appropriate technology, incorporating both commercial and safety aspects (non-commercial) and specifically adapted to meet maritime requirements by allowing two-way contact between boats in distress and emergency rescue coordination centres.
  2. Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre. This component provides capacity to process distress signals and coordinate search and rescue activities on Lake Victoria.
  3. Search and Rescue (SAR) institutions. This component seeks to establish SAR facilities on Lake Victoria to save lives and enhance security.
  4. Capacity building. This component seeks to provide resources necessary for the effective project coordination, management and execution.
